Stainless Steel Finishes
Standard mill finishes can be applied to flat rolled stainless steel directly by the rollers and by mechanical abrasives. Steel is first rolled to size and thickness and then annealed to change the properties of the final material. Any oxidation that forms on the surface (scale) is removed by pickling, and the passivation layer is created on the surface. A final finish can then be applied to achieve the desired aesthetic appearance.
- No. 0 – Hot Rolled Annealed, thicker plates
- No. 1 – Hot rolled, annealed and passivated
- No. 2D – cold rolled, annealed, pickled and passivated
- No. 2B – as above with additional pass through polished rollers
- No. 2BA – Bright Annealed (BA) as above with highly polished rollers
- No. 3 – coarse abrasive finish applied mechanically
- No. 4 – fine abrasive finish
- No. 6 – matte finish
- No. 7 – reflective finish
- No. 8 – mirror finish
Aluminum Alloys
There is a great deal of aluminum alloys in modern jets, helicopters, spacecraft, and defense aircraft. Most aluminum alloys offer high weight to strength rations, corrosion resistance, formability, and favorable pricing. Some of the benefits of aluminum alloys include
- High performance under cryogenic temperatures
- Less dense than steel but as strong and does not rust
Aluminum alloys are found in complex aerospace applications like engines, propellers, chasses, fuselage frames, and fuel tanks.

Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel
You can find both carbon and stainless steel in a wide variety of aerospace and defense applications. Continental Steel is a proud supplier of a large amount of carbon steel plates for the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Titanium and Titanium Alloys
Titanium is an excellent candidate for aerospace applications for a number of reasons including a high strength to weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance. Though it is quite expensive, it is used in a variety of parts and situations including:
- Forged wing structures
- Landing gear
- Critical fasteners, springs, and hydraulic tubing
- Booster rockets
- Manned spacecraft
- Throughout the International Space Station
Recently Continental Steel has received requests from the budding commercial space industry to provide titanium plates for an upcoming satellite project.

Nickel Alloys
In aerospace and military applications, nickel steel alloys are extremely popular. This demand is due to its increased hardness, tensile strength, and elastic limit, all without reduced ductility. It also maintains strength at elevated temperatures as high as 1,050˚C to 1,200˚C. You find nickel alloys in different aerospace products including, bolts, terminals, keys, clevises, turbine blades, wheels, and combustion chamber liners. The nickel-based super alloys Inconel, Monel, and Incoloy are also used extensively.
